24 organizations and political parties have joined a letter campaign demanding that Norsk Hydro pull out of the Utkal project in India and stop further development plans concerning the mining company MRN in Brazil.

This campaign was started in October last year by The Future in our Hands Norway, Nature and Youth, and FIVAS (Association for International Water and Forest Studies).

Among those supporting the campaign is the Socialist Left Party (SV). October 26 last year SV wrote a letter to Minister of Industry and Energy Jens Stoltenberg focusing on this issue and asking whether the Minister will contact Hydro in order to stop the said projects.

The Ministry's reply dated November 28 was that the government, in spite of the fact that it owns 51% of the stock in Norsk Hydro, will leave the administration to the board and the managing director.

This response is based on an account from Hydro Aluminium according to which the environmental challenges in Brazil and India "are being handled in a manner not making it problematic for Hydro to be co-owner."

Consequently the Ministry will not ask Hydro to stop the projects.
