Editorial: Mustad fraud

Only after NorWatch's report on Mustad's social security fraud in the Philippines (see NorWatch no. 13/99) reached the Norwegian press, the company acted according to its conscience.

- I am very angry and shocked. What if a pregnant woman employed at our company went to collect her rightful social security money, and was turned down because the company had not paid its part of the social security fees. What an outcry we would have had, said the union leader at Mustad's factory in Gjøvik, Arild Vie, to the press.

The Mustad management in Gjøvik, Norway, accepted the criticism and promised to improve. According to club leader Vie, this happened already the day after the news reports. A check was sent to the Philippines to make up for the social security debt.

Hopefully, the women at the assembly lines in the company's fishing gear factory in Manila will get their rightful social security benefits in the future.

But why, Mustad, does it take embarrassing news reports to make you react?
